Joy Turns to Horror: Car Plows into Liverpool Celebration, Injuring Dozens

Live: Arrest after car hits pedestrians at Liverpool parade

Liverpool, UK – A day of jubilant celebration for Liverpool FC fans turned into a scene of chaos and concern yesterday, Monday, May 26, 2025, when a car plowed into a crowd gathered for the team’s Premier League victory parade. The incident, which occurred on Water Street shortly after 6 PM, saw 27 people hospitalized, including four children. Two individuals, one adult and one child, are reported to be in serious condition.

The North West Ambulance Service confirmed that an additional 20 people were treated at the scene for minor injuries, bringing the total number of those affected to nearly 50. Four people, including a child, had to be freed from under the vehicle by firefighters.

A 53-year-old white British man from the Liverpool area, believed to be the driver of the vehicle, has been arrested in connection with the incident. Merseyside Police have swiftly stated that the incident is not being treated as terrorism-related and appears to be an isolated event. This quick clarification by authorities is seen as an effort to prevent the spread of misinformation and speculation online.

Eyewitnesses described terrifying moments as the car accelerated into the packed street, sending people flying. One witness, Harry Rashid, recounted hearing “pop, pop, pop” as people were struck and thrown from the car’s bonnet. Another, Natasha Rinaldi, simply said, “It was a horrible scene.” Footage circulating online appears to show the vehicle speeding up as it veered into pedestrians on both sides of the street. Some angry bystanders reportedly attempted to smash the car’s windows after it came to a halt, before police intervened.

The incident cast a “very dark shadow” over what was intended to be a joyous occasion, as stated by Liverpool city council leader Liam Robinson. Hundreds of thousands of fans had gathered to celebrate Liverpool’s 20th top-flight title, a victory that could not be publicly celebrated in 2020 due to COVID-19 restrictions.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer condemned the “appalling scenes” and extended his thoughts to all affected. He also praised the “remarkable bravery” of the police and emergency services for their rapid response. Liverpool FC has also released a statement, expressing their thoughts and prayers for those impacted and affirming their full support to the emergency services.

Authorities are conducting extensive inquiries to establish the full circumstances leading up to the collision and have urged the public not to speculate or share distressing content online. The city of Liverpool, known for its resilience, is now focused on supporting the injured and their families as the investigation continues.
