Terrorist Attack in Pahalgam: Tourists Targeted After Religious Identification, One Killed, Several Injured

Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir: On Tuesday, terrorists opened indiscriminate fire on tourists in Pahalgam, Jammu & Kashmir, resulting in the deaths of two individuals and injuries to ten others. The incident occurred in the upper reaches of the Baisaran Valley. Security forces are currently conducting a search operation in the area and efforts are underway to neutralize the terrorists. The area where the terrorist attack took place is accessible only by foot or mules. Speaking to the news agency PTI, a woman reported that her husband was shot in the head, and seven other people were also injured in the attack.¹ The woman, who did not disclose her identity, pleaded for help in getting the injured to a hospital. A senior police officer informed that security forces reached the Baisaran Valley in Pahalgam immediately after hearing the gunshots.

The attackers were reportedly wearing police uniforms. The terrorist organization TRF is suspected to be behind the attack.

Reacting to the Pahalgam firing incident, BJP leader Ravinder Raina stated that Pakistani terrorists had carried out a cowardly attack on tourists in Pahalgam, South Kashmir. He said that the cowardly Pakistani terrorists cannot face the brave soldiers of the Indian Army, Jammu & Kashmir Police, and paramilitary forces, so they targeted unarmed and innocent tourists who had come to visit Kashmir. He informed that some injured tourists have been admitted to a local hospital, and the army and police have cordoned off the entire area. He also asserted that the terrorists responsible for this attack and those who helped them will definitely be punished. Meanwhile, former Chief Minister of Jammu & Kashmir, Mehbooba Mufti, strongly condemned the terrorist attack and claimed that five people had died in the incident. She wrote on social media platform X that she strongly condemns the cowardly attack on tourists in Pahalgam, in which tragically five people lost their lives and many were injured. She stated that such violence is unacceptable and must be condemned. She further added that historically, Kashmir has always warmly welcomed tourists, so this rare incident is extremely worrying. She demanded that the perpetrators be brought to justice and that a thorough investigation be conducted into potential security lapses. She also emphasized that ensuring the safety of visitors is paramount and steps should be taken to prevent such attacks in the future.
